Most courses in universities and colleges today are compulsory, however, there are a few courses that are ite its small percentage, optional courses have given rise to the question whether college students should choose their courses at their own wills.
As far as I am concerned, I think college students should be encouraged to choose courses they are interested the saying goes, "Interest is the best teacher"ents will certainly study more efficiently the subjects they willingly choose than the ones they are forced to ’s more,because the subjects they choose are no longer a burden,they may become more active in the study concerned.
So I incline to say that colleges and universities should set up more optional courses for students to choose.
Alongwith the development of our education, today most universities have offeredvarious electives for students to choose and study. However, some people claimthat these elective courses have very little effect on spreading knowledge andstudents’ development because what students concern about when choosingelectives are so different.
Thereare various kinds of reasons for choosing electives and I list some in arily, the most important and wide factor students concern about is theteachers of the courses. Instead considering the quality of the teacher, or theform or style of the teacher will take or act in the course, they just want tomake sure that the teacher they choose will never keep trace of theirattendance and let them fail in their exams. In addition, a large number ofstudents choose their elective courses aiming to get a high score but neverconsider what they will learn and how to apply to it. What’s worse, somestudents choose their electives just they are forced by their schools’institution demand and their score need.
Asfar as I am concerned, I advocate that the most important thing we shouldconcern about when choosing electives is our personal interests. The mostworthy meaning for these electives is to broaden our horizon and extend ourknowledge as much as possible and to complement our major and compulsorycourses. Therefore, what electives we choose should be in accordance with ourinterests and our career planning instead of aiming to make high score or passthe exam.
This term our school laid down a new rule about selective court. For the first two weeks, we may sit in as many classes as we like before we decide on which courses to choose. We jumped for joy. The first week I attended classes for four evenings on end and found out that most of the teachers took it serioualy. They were busy in "winning votes" for fear, that later on no one would attend their lectures.
For example, the teacher of Modern Literature of Taiwan said, "Actually the first two hours of my lecture were only a prelude. The real contents have not been involved. In the furore, we shall discuss such famous writers as Qiong Yao, Xi Murong, etc, and such famous aetresses as Lin Fengjiao, Lin Qingxia etc. We have lots of vedio-taped films to watch.
