1. The following day, however, the doctor consoled him by telling him that his chances of being able to leave hospital in time for New Year Celebrations were good. ( L29 )

句型解剖:sb’s chances of doing sth are good 某人做某事的可能性很大

The chances that ……are good. 或者The chances are good that……

There is a chance of / that …….

There is a remote chance of / that…….

Chances are that……

The chances are ten to one that 事情十有八九会……

sb have a chance of doing sth

sb have no chance of doing sth

sb’s chances of…… are greatly improved / increased某人做某事的可能性大大地增加了

sb’s chances of…… are greatly reduced某人做某事的可能性大大地减小了

As she is not rich, the chances that she will ever be able to afford such purchases are remote.

2. Farm labourers said that they always woke up to find that work had been done overnight. ( L30)

如何翻译不定式“to find that work had been done overnight” 是正确理解这句话含义的关键所在。

I’ve come to pick up my son.

What have I said (only)to make you so sad?

Burglar alarms going off at any time of the day or night serve only to annoy passers-by and actually assist burglars to burgle.

注意:句话中的短语“only to annoy… assist……”

3. Everyone went to the funeral, for the ‘ghost’ was none other than Eric Cox, a third brother who was supposed to have died as a young man. ( L30)

句型解剖:do sth as a young man 年轻时候做某事

如果这句话不用“as a young man”来表示“当某人年轻时”,一般我们只能想到用“when sb was young”这个表达。同样,当我们说“当我是个大学生、在我大学时代”,我们也不必按照往常的思路说“when I was a university student”或“during my university days”, 而是可以说“as a university student”。

Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experience as a young man.

Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experience when he was a young man.

Before he retired, Frank was the head of a very large business company, but as a boy he used to work in a small shop.

这句话的中文里提到了“小时候”,按照一般的思路往往会翻译成:in one’s childhood或者when sb was young;但作者这里使用了“as a boy”来表达,可谓和上文的“as a young man”有着异曲同工之妙!

Have you ever read the book——A portrait of the artist as a young man?
