The information age

“Knowledge is power.” This is more obviously true with the advent(到来) of the information age. With the rapid development of science and technology, man’s knowledge is increasing very quickly. More and more books and scientific papers are published every year. It is said that the total of man’s knowledge doubles every ten years. Besides, information spreads very quickly through television and computer networks, and people in different countries can share their knowledge and information in a fantastic(惊人的) short period. Like population explosion, information explosion in our times.

At the beginning of the industrial revolution, a country's comparative(相对的,比较的) advantage depended largely on the natural resources endowed(天生具有) by nature. Then, people experienced several phases(阶段) in industry revolution: the primary industry(agriculture), the secondary industry(manufacturing 工业), and the tertiary(第三的) industry(服务). Now, we are in the fourth industry stage----the information industry.

It is argued that in future people should no longer be classified(分类的) as white collars(衣领) or blue collars, but rather as knowledge or non-knowledge workers. The knowledge workers can not only read and write, and perform rote(死记硬背) tasks, they must meet the basic requirements(需要) of computer literacy(读写能力) and constantly(不断地) conceive(想象，构想)new way to match(相适合) the changing demands of increasing productivity(生产率,生产力).

It is people mastering the most advanced knowledge who will take the lead. Systems developers(开发者), computer scientists and programmers, management analysts and inventors are in most demand in the industry countries.

The challenge(挑战) facing every country is to resuscitate(复苏) its investment(投资) and training. The only way to get greater knowledge is though education and training. Knowledge, like capital(首都) and material resources, has become an essential(不可缺的) factor of production. Therefore, the educational system of a society ought to enable its members to make a rapid transition(过渡) to adapt to the knowledge-based war. Otherwise, that society will inevitably(不可避免的) lag(落后) behind.

People do behave differently depending on what they are wearing. The reason is not because they have changed, but because people’s reactions to them has changed.

Certain clothes are appropriate for certain situations. A man can wear a suit to work and a woman can wear something professional looking like a skirt and jacket. When everyone dresses the same, there is no problem. It is like a uniform. Imagine going to a law office to hire a lawyer. One of the lawyers is wearing a suit; the other is wearing jeans. Which lawyer do you want to hire? Similarly, a mechanic works on cars all day and wears clothes that can get dirty. It would be strange to find a mechanic wearing a coat and tie to repair and engine.

People will treat you differently depending on what you are wearing. It will depend on how well they know you and where you are. If your clothes are unusual for the situation, they may treat you with disrespect. I remember once I had an old army coat. I wore it into a fancy candy shop to buy some chocolates. The woman was very suspicious and a little afraid. I couldn’t understand her reaction since it was still me underneath my big, old ugly green coat. I was dressed like a bum and this caused the salesperson to react negatively to me. Consequently, I was even more polite than usual.

This experience shows me that sometimes I do behave differently because of what I’m wearing. In this case, I had to balance my appearance. Still, that doesn’t mean that I’m rude if I dress up.

In my life, Ms. Wang is the most important person to me. Her teaching skills are spanerse. In class, she usually uses games and posters. She works hard for us. When other teachers rest, she still keeps working and working. When we are mischievous, she is good at giving systematic guidance.

We are really grateful for what she has done for us. We want to say ”thank you” to her.

上个星期三晚上七点，我和几位同学在邦德学校上了一堂既特别又具特色的英语交流课。

这可不是普通的中国英语老师来给我们上课，是特别邀请了一位来自新加坡的外国老师。另外还有几位老师旁听，还有摄像呢！当他来到我们教室时，顿时教室里的气氛活跃起来。他个子特别高，有着个秃顶，两边的头发全是白色，卷卷的。走起路来肚子一挺一挺的，看上去很滑稽（对于我来说）。他用英语做了个简单的自我介绍，从中得知他David，一点中文都不会讲，所以我们只能用英语交流。

没多久便上课了。

他端正地走上台，跟我们说一起做个游戏，一听到做游戏同学们的眼睛都发亮了，一个个竖起耳朵听着。他说：“我们分成四个小组，每四人一组，每一组各代表一种动物。分别有‘猪、鸡、羊和牛‘。我们是牛组。要求就是每个组说出杀掉其它三种动物的原因以及再说出为什么不杀自己的'原因。”我刚开始觉得很奇怪，怎么玩这种游戏，杀来杀去的，以前从来没玩过这种“怪”游戏。可后来一想，这不过是个游戏，能锻炼我们的口语说服能力，能玩好这种游戏，也是要费很大努力的。

于是我们便动笔开始写牛的优点和其它动物的缺点。四名同学各写一种动物，我负责写鸡的缺点。鸡，不就是我们的家常菜吗？它可是最常被杀的了。把鸡杀来吃，色香味俱全，这多好写！

十分钟过去了。我们通过抽签形式来辩论。我们是第三个。大家都是各抒己见，出口成章，说出一大堆理由来，都是“语惊四座”（有点夸张），我记得其中有一个特别好笑的，鸡组有一名同学在说为什么不能杀鸡的原因，其中有一点是这样的：因为有禽流感，所以我们不能杀鸡。”他一说完，全班哄堂大笑，我边笑边想：这是哪门子歪理，不过再仔细一想，他的“歪理”也不歪，本来就是呀，有禽流感嘛，可不就不能杀鸡嘛！我们的课堂时刻弥漫着欢声笑语，气氛达到了最高点。

轮到我了，我也是写了一大堆理由，但是不好意思拿着张纸读，所以只好大概地概括出来：“,kyou.”

我在热烈的掌声中坐下了。等大家都说完了，我们便采用投票的方式决定杀哪种动物。是心有灵犀吧！我们其中三组都把票投给了鸡组。就这样，鸡组“惨败”。后来，David还幽默地问我们玩地开不开心。我们异口同声地说“yes！”后来他还风趣地说，大家都开心，可我们的鸡组就不会开心了，因为他们被杀了，哈哈。我们大家也都跟着笑起来。

后来我们还一起学习了《走遍美国》。继续上次课，这次我们学到了第五课。这里就不详细描述了。

两个小时的光阴如箭似的飞过，我们下课了。特别荣幸地是David还主动和我以及同学们握了握手，这次合作真的是非常愉快。我们认为，能和外国朋友多多交流，机会难得，并且收获颇多，受益匪浅，打这次课后，我认为以后还要好好学习英语，这样才能有足够的能力和外国朋友对话交流。

告别完毕，心中仍浮起一丝微微的激动。我带着这种微微的激动踏上了回家的路…

The Olympics are just around the corner. Today I want to talk about good manners and courtesy.

We Chinese have always been respected and highly praised for good manners and courtesy, which have, as well, become precious traditions of our people. In a couple of weeks beyond, a large number of foreign friends will come to China to join us in enjoying the Olympics.

Beforeforeign guests, we should have an easy manner and behave politely and warm-heartedly. In public places, such ugly behaviors as uproar, pushing or squeezing together, spitting and so on should be determinedly forbidden. In a sense, each of us will not simply stand forourselves but stand for China. Therefore, boys and girls, let’s do it well right now and the eyes of the world are to on us!
