we are on a journey

wherever you are,and whoever you may be, there is one thing in which you and i are just alike, at this moment, and in all the moments of our existence. we are not at rest; we are on a journey. our life is not a mere fact; it is a movement, a tendency, a steady, ceaseless progress towards an unseen goal. we are gaining something, or losing something, every day. even when our position and our character seem to remain precisely the same, they are changing. for the mere advance of time is a change. it is not the same thing to have a bare field in january and in july. the season makes the difference. the limitations that are childlike in the child are childish in the man.

everything that we do is a step in one direction or another. even the failure to do something is in itself a deed. it sets us forward or backward. the action of the negative pole of a magnetic needle is just as real as the action of the positive pole. to decline is to accept the other alternative.

are you richer today than you were yesterday? no? then you are a little poorer. are you better today than you were yesterday? no? then you are a little worse. are you nearer to your port today than you were yesterday? yes, you must be a little nearer to some port or other; for since your ship was first launched upon the sea of life you have never been still for a single moment; the sea is too deep, you could not find an anchorage if you would; there can be no pause until you come into port.

application and perseverance

the greatest results in life are usually attained by si-mp-le means, and the exercise of ordinary qualities. the common life of every day, affords ample opportunities for acquiring experience of the best kind.

fortune has often been blamed for her blindness. those who look into practical life will find that fortune is usually on the side of the industrious, as the winds and waves are on the side of the best navigators. in the pursuit of even the highest branches of human inquiry, the commoner qualities are found the most useful, such as common sense, attention, application, and perseverance.

genius may not be necessary, though even genius of the highest sort does not disdain the use of these ordinary qualities. the very greatest men have been among the least believers in the power of genius, and as worldly wise and persevering as successful men of the commoner sort. some have even defined genius to be only common sense intensified. a distinguished teacher and president of a college spoke of it as the power of ma-ki-ng ef forts. john foster held it to be the power of lighting one's own fire.

newton's was unquestionably a mind of the very highest order, and yet, when asked by what means he had worked out his extraordinary discoveries, he modestly answered, "by always thinking unto them." at another time he thus expressed his method of study: "i keep the subject continually before me, and wait till the first dawnings open slowly by little and little into a full and clear light." it was in newton's case, as in every other, only by diligent application and perseverance that his great reputation was achieved.

dalton, the chemist, repudiated the notion of his being "a genius," attributing everything which he had accomplished to si-mp-le industry and accumulation. john hunter said of himself, "my mind is like a beehives; but full as it is of buzz and apparent confusion, it is yet full of order and regularity, and food collected with incessant industry from the choiceset stores of nature. "

we have, indeed, but to glance at the biographies of great men to find that the most distinguished inventors, artists, thinkers, and workers of all kinds, owe their success, in a great measure, to their indefatigable industry and application.

the law of obedience

服从

the very in the creed of common sense is obedience.

perform your work with a whole heart.

revolt may be sometimes necessary, but the man who tries to mix revolt and obedience is doomed to disappoint himself and everybody with whom he has dealings. to flavor work with protest is to fail absolutely.

when you revolt, climb, hike, get out, defy, tell everybody and everything to go to hades! that disposes of the case. you thus separate yourself entirely from those you have served, no one misunderstands you have declared yourself.

the man who quits in disgust when ordered to perform a task which he considers menial or unjust may be a pretty good fellow, but the malcontent who takes your order with a smile and then secretly disobeys is a dangerous proposition. to pretend to obey, and yet carry in your heart the spirit of revolt is to do half hearted, slipshod work. if revolt and obedience are equal in power, your engine will then stop on the center and you benefit no one, not even yourself.

the spirit of obedience is the controlling impulse that dominates the receptive mind and the hospitable heart.

there are boats that mind the helm and there are boats that do not. those that do not, get holes knocked in them sooner or later. to keep off the rocks, obey the rudder.

obedience is not to slavishly obey this man or that, but it is that cheerful mental state which responds to the necessity of the case, and does the thing without any back talk unuttered or expressed.

the man who has not learned to obey has trouble ahead of him every step of the way. the world has it in for him continually, because he has it in for the man who does not know how to receive orders is not fit to issue them to others. but the individual who knows how to execute the orders given him is preparing the way to issue orders, and better still to have them obeyed.

as you slowly open your eyes, look around, notice where the light comes into your room; listen carefully, see if there are new sounds you can recognize; feel with your body and spirit, and see if you can sense the freshness in the air.

as everyone knows, english is very important today. it has been used everywhere in the world. it has become the most common language on internet and for international trade. if we can speak english well, we will have more chance to succeed. because more and more people have taken notice of it, the number of the people who go to learn english has increased at a high speed.

but for myself, i learn english not only because of its importance and its usefulness, but also because of my love for it. when i learn english, i can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world. when i read english novels, i can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the translation. when i speak english, i can feel the confident from my words. when i write english, i can see the beauty which is not the same as our chinese...

i love english, it gives me a colorful dream. i hope i can travel around the world one day. with my good english, i can make friends with many people from different countries. i can see many places of great intrests. i dream that i can go to london, because it is the birth place of english.

i also want to use my good english to introduce our great places to the english spoken people, i hope that they can love our country like us.

i know, rome was not built in a day. i believe that after continuous hard study, one day i can speak english very well.

eagle acquired in a strong wind and rain in the wings, the plum blossom in full bloom in the cold weather assail the nostrils of the fragrance. in today's competitive times, we will not be timid, looking over, we will learn to survive in the competition, in the face of adversity in life to write music. as a philosopher said: the above on the fate of the people, confidence is the key to the fate! thorns in front of any problems, we will hold it constant. xue-hai vast, we have to do down the brave sailors, wind and the waves, the future together, the ancient saying goes: the trials and tribulations, as in ru yu. "youth in the footsteps of firms such as flow goes, the prime years of fighting can not afford to waste points. fellow students, let us seize the good life every day, towards the other side of the gold before. pro-yuan xian fish, it is better still active and networks. we use the wisdom and courage raised the ideal of sailing, with our youth and life played a strong tone of the times! when we abandoned the confusion, take the course; ground when we blinded, tireleyaojiang, the fate of the gates will be open to us, tempting time will come! the future is not a dream today, in our hands!

if i were a boy again, i would practice perseverance(毅力)more often, and never give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient. if we want light, we must conquer darkness. perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results. “there are only two creatures,” says a proverb, “who can surmount the pyramids—the eagle and the snail.”

if i were a boy again, i would school myself into a habit of attention; i would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. i would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. the habit of attention becomes part of our life, if we begin early enough. i often hear grown-up people say “i could not fix my attention on the lecture or book, although i wished to do so” , and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth.

if i were to live my life over again, i would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. i would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. it takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. it only needs early cultivation to become a power.

if i were a boy again, i would look on the cheerful side. life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, i smile back upon you; but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return.

inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it. “who shuts love out ,in turn shall be shut out from love.”

finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the sole purpose of life, i would, if i were a boy again, i would still try harder to make others happy.
