If asked whether the Internet is the greatest discovery of the 20th century, my answer would be yes. The Internet has drawn the world closer together, realized countless incredible dreams, and provided modern people with a great many conveniences and a brilliant life.

Today, many people simply feel they cannot live without the Internet. Governments publish their latest policies and decisions online for worldwide recognition. Political campaigns are often done online to gain wider public support. Companies and enterprises resort to the Internet for more business opportunities and potential customers home and abroad. Universities and researchers turn to the Internet if they’d seek international cooperation or funding. Common folks like us also rely on the cyber world in various ways, for communication, entertainment, banking and shopping.

True, the power of the Internet is all pervasive and its many negative effects are already visible. For example, Internet addicts tend to withdraw to their own fantasy world rather than communicate with a real person. Children are exposed to online pornography and violence. California Developing Warning System for Water Quality at Beaches

LOS ANGELES— The current drought in California means less water runoff from cities and cleaner ocean water for beachgoers. Some beaches, however, are still polluted, including some tourist hotspots. Now, researchers are developing a faster way to check beach water quality.

The famous sun and surf of southern California may look glamorous, but what beachgoers cannot see in some of the ocean water is anything but attractive, says Angelo Bellomo of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

“When we have runoff from the urban environment, it could be carrying with it contamination due to animal waste, sewage overflows; and if those enter the beaches through the normal pipes that terminate in the ocean, you want to avoid contact with water during those periods,” he says.

Bellomo says a number of infectious diseases could be transmitted in ocean water.

Plenty of people, however, play in the water at the beach at Santa Monica Pier, one of the most polluted beaches in California.

　　‘A little ridiculous’

Public health officials are concerned and are looking at a better way of determining water quality. Water at the beaches is monitored with a lab test. If the quality is poor, a sign is posted; but, it does not necessarily reflect what is in the water that day, says Leslie Griffin with the environmental group, Heal the Bay.

“Right now it takes 18 to 24 hours to get those water quality results, but we think that that is a little ridiculous because we want people to know the day of when they are going in the water whether or not they can be getting sick,” Griffith says.

Researchers in California are developing what they call a predictive modeling system that could speed up the process, says Heal the Bay’s James Alamillo.

“It can take 15 minutes to produce a similar result in terms of a public health decision,” Alamillo says.

‘Nowcasting’

With the help of computers, researchers pull data from the environment and a prediction is made about the water quality of that day. It is called "Nowcasting."

Some of the environmental data may include wind speed and direction, wave information and historic bacterial counts, but the beaches are unique in their own way, so the models have to be tailor-made for each one.

So far, Angelo Bellomo says the predictive modeling looks promising.

“We think that the modeling that we have seen so far is generally more accurate than the testing that we are doing, and the reason for that is that even though it is a model and it's predicting water quality, it is more timely,” Bellomo says.

Hong Kong and the U.S. state of Ohio have similar methods of predicting water quality. The experts on the U.S. West Coast say predictive modeling may be the best tool they have until technology advances and offers a faster way of testing the water in the lab.

But there is such a large amount of criticism concerning the computer games that they are generally regarded as a vile way of infecting hostility and belligerence. And the managers of such business are severely criticized by the schools and parents alike. On the other hand, this business seems never fading. my name is liming. i am studying at college. a week ago i saw a traffic accident, which is still vivid in my mind. it was at about 9:00 on saturday morning, june 15th, when i went out of the university to visit a friend of mine at another university. i was walking leisurely on the sidewalk when i heard a loud crash of two vehicles just at the t-junction about 10 meters away. two taxis crashed together. it was a traffic accident. i went up and fimnd that the two taxis were badly damaged. both cars were out of shape. one door of a car was knocked off and lying on the road. one driver was hlooding and another was shut in the taxi. some people were trying to help the driver get out of the damaged car. one man was calling to the traffic policeman station. a lot of cars were jammed on the road. from the stopping track on the road, it is clear that the two taxis were driving too fast. but it is just one of the reasons. in my opinion, the taxi drivers are eager to take more passengers and make a little more money. on the other hand, both drivers don't show concern for one another. both of them wanted to run in front of another. therefore, the accident is inevltable. so far, we should let the drivers keep it in their lnlnd that a little slower, a little safer. taking care of other's lives means taking care of your own life.
